MAGICIAN: APPRENTICE
Raymond E. Feist
(originally suggested by Chris Montgomery)
SYNOPSIS
To the forest on the shore of the Kingdom of the Isles, the orphan Pug came
to study with the master magician Kulgan. But though his courage won him a place at court
and the heart of a lovely Princess, he was ill at ease with the normal ways of wizardry.
Yet Pug's strange sort of magic would one day change forever the fates of two worlds. For
dark beings from another world had opened a rift in the fabric of spacetime to begin again
the age-old battle between the forces of Order and Chaos. STONECLAVE REVIEWS
POSTED 10/28/99 BY "MERLIN" AT STONECLAVE:
"In my opinion, this is perhaps
one of the best novels of the riftwar/serpentwar/empire saga. It is certainly one of the
closest to my heart. It is masterly in the way it weaves its tale through pug and tomas,
through the rift, to the elves, in both worlds, in all magics. It is a journey of
discovery, which ignites the first spark of what becomes a blaze of interest (dare I say
addiction?!) to Feist's novels. There are too many titles in the saga(s) to mention here,
but it is always the first which remains my favourite. I also recommend Feist's
"Faerie Tale", set in the modern world for a much closer to home, much more
eerie effect. Raymond E. Feist is one of the masters. When I'm rich, I'll buy every one of
his books!!!"
POSTED BY CHRIS MONTGOMERY:
"This is the first book in the
Riftwar Saga, in which Feist creates and breathes life into a truly absorbing world--
Midkemia. The story starts with the concerns of Pug and Tomas, but then spirals out into
more and more influential events. A masterwork of storytelling, it is nearly as addictive
as Donaldson. Fortunately, the Riftwar Saga is four books, then the Mistress of the Empire
trilogy explores the same setting, and then the Serpentwar Saga adds four more books,
right in Midkemia. High fantasy with one of the most fascinating plots in any book I've
read (quite a few.) Incredibly enjoyable."
